Description

User problem:

Right now, there is no easy way to naturally learn more about or discover the Event List. This minimizes its potential impact. However, there are many places where it may make sense to promote or share the event list. We want to increase the discoverability of the Event List, so more people can visit and then find events and/or WikiProjects that interest them to either learn more about or join.

User story:

As a contributor who is interested in organized collaborative activities on the wikis, I want to be able to learn about the Event List, so that I can find a central place to discover upcoming events, activities, or projects that I may want to join or learn more about.

Early thoughts on how this could work:
  • Discovery through Event Registration (organizer side)
    • After an organizer creates an event, they can see promotion of the Event List in the success screen
  • Discovery through Event Registration (participant side)
    • On the event page
    • On EventDetails
    • After registering for an event, via:
      • On-wiki success message
      • Confirmation email sent after registration
    • Perhaps an automated email after the event ("Thanks for joining this event! Here is how you can learn about other events!")
  • On the Newcomer Homepage

Design explorations

These explorations are about finding various opportunities to surface events to readers and editors: Figma

The first group of options promote events within the event space, i.e. to people who are already participating in an event. This raises the question: how would organizers feel about promoting other events on their event pages? Could they have some control over which events get promoted? Territorialism, etc.

The second group of options promote events in more general spaces: help pages, newcomer dashboard, main menu.

Open questions & ideas for further explorations:

  • These designs assume that events have images associated with them — what would it take to add the ability for organizers to set a thumbnail image for an event?
  • Could we use the worklist to promote events in a more targeted way on specific article pages?

Epic created, which may be worked on later: T385915

This is becoming increasingly possible/useful, since we now collect data on wiki + topic of event. We are also considering collecting data on event type + task in the future too. So we could surface relevant events to users in different places. But we would not want it to be overboard/spammy-feeling, so we would need to pick a few choice places, if we did this work.

Design added to epic: T385349

Ticket created: T385918. We may or may not work on this.

Not sure it would be popular/requested enough by users, but it's something to think about.

This is very similar to the Community Updates module, so we won't be working on this. Instead, we may decide to create some module/way of viewing the Collaboration List on the Newcomer Homepage.

Open questions & ideas for further explorations:

  • These designs assume that events have images associated with them — what would it take to add the ability for organizers to set a thumbnail image for an event?

Investigation completed on this: T377029

  • Could we use the worklist to promote events in a more targeted way on specific article pages?

Great idea. Added as a future feature idea: T385919.

Now that all work/open questions have had decisions reached about next steps, I am closing this ticket. Thank you so much for all of this fantastic work!
