Description

This is the followup task of T368933, T369744, where nodes mw[1349-1413] have been slated for refresh.

There are a few complications here:

  • a number of the originally named nodes have been renamed to wikikube-worker* in the process.
  • some of the nodes, namely mw[1349-1351,1407].eqiad.wmnet are still functioning as videoscalers (jobrunners technically due to a detail from the legacy clusters) and can't be decommed until videoscalling has been moved to mw-on-k8s.
  • due to some sizing constaints with /26 allocations in wikikube, where we can't allocate to the newer wikikube-worker nodes the proper blocks (task to be filed), we want decom quickly as many nodes as possible to free up the blocks.

Given the complications, I will not be tagging dc-ops in this task until the complications are resolved for the entire group.

This task will track the decommission-hardware of servers mw[1349-1413]

With the launch of updates to the decom cookbook, the majority of these steps can be handled by the service owners directly. The DC Ops team only gets involved once the system has been fully removed from service and powered down by the decommission cookbook.

@wiki_willy wikikube-ctrl1001 is in the batch that is being decommissioned in this task. It was procured in 2019. Given the work done in T353464 where we had to somehow get hold of a 10G nic card and reimage the node and all, I am wondering whether we can push refresh back for like 1 year or so and put it in the next fy budget. It feels like wasted work on all sides to find some other node and redo this. Does that sound ok?

Yup, that's correct. I handled the followup of that task in T369744: wikikube-worker1240 to wikikube-worker1304 implementation tracking and filed the decom task and in that context I identified this.

I think that to do so, we 'll need to chose a server in a rack that has free 10G ports and re-cable. I 'll file a separate task

Ah that makes sense, thanks for the info. We'll go ahead and move the server, after the Phabricator task is created. FWIW, all servers being ordered this fiscal year and moving forward will have 10g cards...and the refresh/upgrade to 10g switches in eqiad for rows C and D is supposed to happen probably later in Q4.
