Prompt people to reconsider adding an external link to article body/intro
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

This task involves the work of introducing a Check that would prompt people to reconsider adding an external link to the body or lead section of an article, per en:WP:ELNO.

Story

  • As someone attempting to add an external link to the body or lead section of an article at en.wiki [i], I would value being made aware that me doing so has the potential to violate a policy so that I can A) avoid the negative impact(s) me doing so could cause and B) better understand what people do and do not consider useful contributions to Wikipedia.
  • As an experienced volunteer motivated to ensure people visiting Wikipedia find useful and reliable information presented in a consistent manner, I want people who are attempting to make edits that could cause the opposite to happen to be made aware when they're at risk of doing so, so that I relieve myself of the work of addressing these issues retroactively and direct my attention to things I consider to be higher priority.

Background

mediawiki.org:

@Trizek-WMF and @KStoller-WMF, seeing edits like this one, are we doing enough to let newcomers know that the "add a link" task is for internal links to other Wikipedia articles, not external ones (which violate w:WP:ELNO if placed in the intro or body)?

i. TODO: learn the extent to which this policy is in place across Wikipedias

Thank you to @Sdkb and @KStoller-WMF for prompting us to create this ticket.

One thought: When I come across an external link in the body of an article, sometimes it's being used as a kind of reference, i.e. it goes to an external source that verifies the information being provided nearby. In these cases, I tend to convert it into a citation rather than just directly removing it. It'd be helpful if this check (and the related suggestion; not sure where that is on Phabricator) could prompt editors to consider that option as one possible way to resolve the issue.

Following up from my previous comment, I have created T414898 for that issue as it relates to Suggestion Mode.
