After discussing with @MDemosWMF & also within fr-tech there are 2 tracks on this
- The underlying batch import code is problematic. Retrofitting something like the way we handle the imports onto it for error viewing / retrying is really tricking. We are looking to work with the Core team to replace it with something build using more recent technology & methods. This is not likely to be available until after Big English
- there are some low hanging fruit we can try to deal with to get some short term usability improvements - so we will try to tackle some low-hanging fruit
