Toolforge UI: Publish newcomer experience and recruitment survey
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Background

The Toolforge modernization initiative aims to enhance the experience of current and prospective users by introducing a graphical user interface (GUI). This modernization effort is intended to simplify and streamline tool deployment and management workflows, particularly for non-technical or novice users.

In order to inform this opportunity and address user needs, it is crucial to understand the challenges faced by different Toolforge user groups during the setup and launch of their tools. Gathering this feedback will help prioritize design requirements and inform the overall scope of the initiative.

Goal

Toolforge newcomer are the main targets of the modernization solution. Surveying them will allow us to gain insight into their experience and challenges. Specifically, we aim to achieve the following:

  • Identify key challenges: Do new Toolforge users struggle when first using the platform? Which interaction steps or tasks do they struggle with the most? (This information will be factored in when design requirements are prioritized)
  • Understand onboarding Drop-off: Non-tech-savvy users might give up on creating their own tools due to the technical barrier of entry posed by Toolforge. We want to understand if this is a shared feeling among prospective adopters of the platform.

Additionally, the survey will also serve to recruit participants for a future round of exploration, where we'll search to validate the usability and suitability of the initial prototype of our solution.

The plan is to distribute the survey using a CentralNotice banner that will be displayed in all pages within the Help:Toolforge subdomain on Wikitech.

For further details, please check: CentralNotice banner request | Banner code (WIP, following WMDE's implementation)
