Incorrect language set when adding caption of an image
Closed, ResolvedPublicBUG REPORT

Description

For many past weeks I have been observing an effect that all my edits or additions to image's captions are lost / rejected. After every successful submission (image caption change) it was clearly seen that no actual changes to that caption has been made.

Today I have finally figured out that this is due to a bug that you have in Wikipedia for Android app introduced in latest update.

Since recent update, when you are adding an image caption in your native language, it is added for English instead.

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • Set your mobile device to English language (have Wikipedia app in English)
  • Open any Polish (or non-english) article with an image
  • Add or modify image's caption

What happens?:

Wikipedia app shows "Image caption (polski)" filed in "Add image caption" view (correct).

When image caption is added or modified it turns out that caption is added for English, not for given (polski; Polish) language. Such change is then rolled back by some user or automatic bot has having incorrect language.

In addition, when you submit your changes, you have the feeling that nothing has actually changed (no actual change in image's caption). This is because you are seeing a description still in your native language. While changes were actually submitted for English language (which description you don't see, as you are browsing Polish articles and therefore you are seeing Polish image captions).

What should have happened instead?:

This functionality must work as before recent change / update. I.e. image caption must be set for current language not for English.

Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):

You can review / confirm this bug by checking history of changes made to "Vue des travaux souterrains dans les mines de sal de Wieliska, en Gallicie".jpg file:

https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plik:%22Vue_des_travaux_souterrains_dans_les_mines_de_sal_de_Wieliska,_en_Gallicie%22.jpg

Path that I have undertaken recently:

  1. I have seen this image in "Żupa solna" article (in Polish)
  2. Since the image has non-Polish description, I have changed it to "Kopalnia soli w Wieliczce"
  3. I was more than sure that I am editing image caption for Polish since "Image caption (polski)" was displayed in app's form
  4. It turned out that image caption for English was actually added and this change was rolled back as being incorrect.

Event Timeline

@trejder Good catch -- it looks like this became broken because of some previous work to fix Chinese variant language selection.; Fortunately an easy fix.

@Dbrant Don't thank me! :) It was just some French bot (I think) that has rolled back my "Polish" image description as being "incorrect English description".

I simply added 2+2 and have got 4.

Good to know that this is an easy to fix. Thanks!
