There are some very limited usage of PHP on the server side:

• Doxygen generated doc have a server side search system (example: https://doc.wikimedia.org/mediawiki-core/master/php/search.php?query=Revision )
• OOUI demos at https://doc.wikimedia.org/oojs-ui/master/demos/

Is the codex demo going to be similar to the OOUI ones? I guess it is fine given it is tightly reviewed and does not depends on many dependencies.

Yup, same model, stand-alone highly-reviewed production-ready code with no dependencies.
