Description

Please provide all the following information:

Some communities focus on helping communities create new Wikipedias while other focus on new Wiktionaries or Wikisources. We don't have any data to recommend what Wikimedia project should a new language focus on.

  • Description.What is your request about?

Comparative analysis across new Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedias, Wikisources, and Wiktionaries. The research can focus on how user retention, community engagement, and content creation changes for different projects across languages.

  • Expected Deliverable. What is the ideal outcome or result of your request?
  • A report highlighting what Wikimedia projects are more useful for what kinds of activities.
  • Estimated Effort. Please provide an estimate of the amount of work needed to complete this task, if known.
  • 5-10 work hours per week for 3 months should help in completing this research without having any interviews but focusing primarily on data analysis
    • Priority Please indicate a priority of your task and a small description of what it would unlock for you. We ask you to leave this task as “needs triage” since your request will go through a Backlog refinement process where our team will prioritize the work.

This is not as straightforward a research because usually communities with new Wikisources usually have another Wikimedia project already.

Hi @SGill. Thank you for submitting this request. We reviewed it and decided not to prioritize it at this point. I will move it to Research-Freezer shortly which is the board in which we keep track of good questions that come our way that we can't prioritize immediately. Here are a few reasons we could not prioritize this request at this point:

  • capacity: We considered the relative impact of this request compared to T381903 and we decided to prioritize the latter.
  • encyclopedic knowledge focus: we would like to delay picking up large projects that are in the intersection of WP and other WM projects until we have more organizational alignment about the strategic pillar "deliver trustworthy encyclopedic content" to be able to most effectively spend resources on this front. There are some things for which we don't need to wait but if we want to provide draft hypothesis or recommendations about which project the language communities may want to start from, I would like more clarity and alignment internally.
  • (less important) This particular request may be better suited for Movement Insights team. I did check with the team's manager before I write this note to you and I know they cannot prioritize it at this point though.

And needless to say: We understand the importance of this request and this line of thinking and I hope that we can find other ways in the future to do work to inform thinking about the ways sister projects contribute to WP (or to the broader open ecosystem).
