Reflect and summarize issues/opportunities related to surveys
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Goals:

  • February 12: Draft summary of successes, challenges, and opportunities related to surveys at WMF. This should include both process-related and technical aspects.
  • February 28: Incorporate feedback from @Isaac and categorize potential improvements by urgency and difficulty.
  • March 28: Make 1-3 small improvements (depending on complexity) and develop plan for remaining aspects.

Given that this is about mostly-internal survey infrastructure/processes, the report can take the form of a Google doc for ease of collaboration/feedback. Depending on final form and broader utility, we can consider publishing somewhere more transparently. @Isaac will try to provide formal feedback by February 19th but will also check in throughout so hopefully the second stage is mostly about categorizing potential improvements.

Areas to Address:

  • Intake process for survey requests
  • Documentation/training available
  • Translation of surveys (T382626)
  • QuickSurveys functionality
  • LimeSurvey functionality
  • LimeSurvey design/branding
  • Open methodological questions -- e.g., response bias from different serving approaches
  • Others as identified by stakeholders

Contributors:
@TAndic will take the lead on compiling/writing. @Bethany will lead on translation and consult on other Design Research aspects as needed. Further consultation support from @CMyrick-WMF, and @YLiou_WMF. @Isaac will provide guidance on structure etc. and feedback.

Update:

  • We decided on three small improvements that will be impactful for either the Research team or wider Foundation which can be implemented this quarter:
    • Update the procedure for survey translations within the Research team (@Bethany) [Status: complete T382626]
    • Update the LimeSurvey survey template to align with the design Codex (@DDeSouza) [Status: V1 complete, needs a full survey pause to make into the default template as this will change all current and past surveys using the default template - @TAndic to coordinate this]
    • Develop tutorials for basic LimeSurvey onboarding and reference (and, as use-cases arise, document more technical implementations) (@TAndic) [Status: in progress, V1 estimated March 31]
  • Some broader proposals based on the Areas to Address require decision briefs or further scoping and alignment, which will be done in Q4.

Closing task as criteria are met.

  • Alongside translation proceedure and LimeSurvey Codex theme alignment, basic LimeSurvey tutorials are now complete (wikifying on office without UploadWizard for 100+ images is a bit more difficult :); this final step to ensure visibility can be finished this week (office draft for moving once finalized here))

As a reminder, decision briefs and tasks identified that need further scoping will be addressed in Q4.
