It's probably not T345568 - mostly because if I do wikitextToDOM( preprocessWikitext( $caption ) ), it does resolve the stripmarker (but then we lose templates in other cases, so that's not good). Putting back on backlog, we'll need to fix this.

Probably could be fixed by T390342: Allow fragment handlers to handle extension tags as well which would presumably allow the extension to incorporate a PFragment which could represent the strip marker.
