Numerique Premium WPL resource does not work
Closed, ResolvedPublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • attempt to use any resource on the Wikipedia Library resource Numerique Premium, through the portal

What happens?: Instead of working, will either kick you out of the proxy entirely whenever you attempt to click on a work, or show errors when any book is accessed. Sometimes it does work very briefly, but will kick you out again at random.

What should have happened instead?: Should have let me access the work in question

Software version (on Special:Version page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.): This particular resource has been very finicky for months. It will usually work randomly for a few minutes but then cease working again. It seems to have gotten worse and now almost never works for me.

We have reached out to the partner to fix this. I will update this ticket as soon as we hear from them.

@PARAKANYAA - Can you please share a screenshot of the issue you're facing? The errors and the links you're trying to access will be helpful.

I just tried to use it, and immediately it kicks me out of the proxy. It adds "?skip=true" to the URL when it does that. Sometimes it will let me get as far as using the book and then throw errors but today I guess not. For context I am using Firefox, but before when I tried Chrome it was not any better.

@sjvipin just checking in since it's been a few weeks; do we need to nudge Numerique?

@sjvipin just checking in since it's been a few weeks; do we need to nudge Numerique?

Just to clarify - what do we need from Numerique on this, or what should we be telling them? I lost the thread a little on how we solved the skip=true issues for other partners.

In their config with OCLC's hosted service:
https://help.oclc.org/Library_Management/EZproxy/EZproxy_database_stanzas/Database_stanzas_N/Numerique_Premium
np.scienceconnect.io either needs to be configured as anonymous or perhaps neverproxy. Basically, they (Numerique + OCLC) should test config changes, and get the managed config updated.

Thanks, Jason. I have emailed the partner about this.

Note that we've now heard back; I'm currently testing some recommended configuration changes.

I had to modify their suggestion, but I believe we have resolved the issues on both staging and production.
Please test and let me know.
Once we've verified the fix, we can merge the config change in git:
https://github.com/WikipediaLibrary/twlight_ezproxy/pull/53

Confirmed I can access the website and content without getting kicked out!

Okay, I merged my own pr since it's clear that it works and also to reflect what we're running in production. I've asked OCLC to update their hosted config and I'm marking this as stalled while we wait on their response so that we can hopefully remove the custom config.

The response from OCLC was positive, but it sounds like it will be some time before a fix is integrated into the hosted config. Since the actual problem is resolved, I'm going to close this out and add a reminder to check back in April.
