Issues with Image Licensing, Placement, and Duplication in Image Recommendations
Open, Needs TriagePublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • Use the Image Recommendations feature to suggest images for Wikipedia articles.

Observe that:
-Some suggested images are not permitted by licensing requirements (e.g., not allowed in Germany).
-Images are sometimes placed inappropriately within the articles.
-Images are duplicated after editing, causing redundancy in the article.
Specific cases:
Duster Bennett – Image reverted due to licensing issues.
Christopher Olsen – Image reverted due to licensing issues.
CipSoft – Image placed inappropriately.

What happens?:
-Images are suggested that do not meet licensing requirements in specific regions (e.g., Germany).
-Images are placed in locations that seem irrelevant or inappropriate within articles.
-Some images are duplicated after editing.

What should have happened instead?:
Only images with the correct licensing should be suggested.
Images should be placed appropriately within the articles.
Duplications should not occur after editing.

Software version (on Special:Version page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):
Wikipedia App Version: 2.7.50514-r-2024-12-11

@Dbrant could you elaborate on what do you need from Content-Transform-Team in this ticket?

Here is an example query of what the android app is asking from the action api:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&generator=search&gsrsearch=hasrecommendation%3Aimage&gsrnamespace=0&gsrsort=random&prop=growthimagesuggestiondata|revisions|pageimages&pilicense=any&rvprop=ids|timestamp|flags|comment|user|content&rvslots=main&rvsection=0

All the links needed to be changed to German Wikipedia - and now they link to the correct diffs.

Image reverted due to licensing issues.

@KStoller-WMF Has growth heard similar reports of this? It would be helpful to know how widespread an issue this is.

Image placed inappropriately.

The Android app only supports automatic infobox placement for English, and the iOS app doesn't support automatic infobox placement for any language yet. From the diff referenced, I understand this is a request for us to add automatic infobox placement for German Wikipedia. We most likely won't have the capacity to do this at the time, but I will file a task: T389155

Images are duplicated after editing, causing redundancy in the article.

We don't have a great example to work from here, @ARamadan-WMF could you kindly follow up with the user to ask for diffs of images being duplicated that have the revision tag app-image-add-top?

I don't believe we have, but we also don't have the "Add an Image" task released at dewiki.
