As a researcher concerned with Wikipedia's multilingual nature, I want to explore how readable edit summaries would work in multiple languages so that all users can benefit from improved clarity. This ticket is to inform what is possible for our watchlist changes
Acceptance Criteria:
- Identification of translation constraints for different languages (e.g. RTL, non-Latin scripts e.t.c.).
- Review of how Wikidata properties are displayed in non-English Wikipedia versions (e.g. RTL, non-Latin scripts, e.t.c.)
- A proposed solution for handling translation challenges
- Check with the community that the proposed solution is acceptable
- Documentation on how translations are handled for the summaries
Checklist
- Review how Wikidata edit summaries currently appear in non-English Wikipedia versions for some examples relevant to where we are likely to make changes
- Identify translation limitations in rendering human-readable edit summaries. - The current UX designs for altering the summaries are ok from a translation perspective. (There could be concerns e.g. about grammar if more extensive changes were made to make things into full sentences e.g. "a fruit was added to X" you might need to know the gender of 'fruit' in the languages)
- Investigate existing localization tools for Wikidata and Wikipedia. What community tools and gadgets exist?
- Propose a strategy for ensuring translated summaries remain clear and accurate.
- Discuss proposed strategy with pilot Wikipedias
- Include a strategy for non-gregorian calendars
- Check natural language summaries (e.g. bots/api) if relevant - e.g. EditSum gadget - our changes would not impact EditSum (though it would not be translated as is)
- Check dates translations as well - made separate ticket
- Consider fallbacks for properties/descriptions, as well as translation keys - and check how we will handle delays/missing translations from the community
- Consider list of common summary formats, how translations are handled, and how any changes we would make could impact that
- Is it deliberate that the edit summary is not translated? Since ‘property’ is not currently translated for Farsi/Hebrew - it is not deliberate
- Edit summaries currently come out left to right. Is this a bug/a thing to review? - this was only an issue using the uselang param - for the RTL wikis themselves it's coming out correctly (see appendix D in the doc)
- relating to the labels ticket: we need Position 1 + Position 2 (and about 5 similar keys) - could we manually add these strings? Is this out of scope for us? These may get overridden anyway - ask translate wiki people
- relating to the labels ticket: We don’t know how parentheses etc are translated to other languages
- Check implementation of getDirMark (deprecated method). Can we adapt the resolving of labels to use <bdi> tag as recommended by T375975
