Description

Since approx 05:00 UTC today and up until now, I'm running into an error while trying to use the classic, old upload form to make an upload of a photograph that I took. Neither browser refreshs nor retries from the beginning will work. Total tries around 6 in the morning between 05:00 and 08:00 and 2 just before opening this bug report.

The servers keep responding with a 503. Below are error messages I got this morning:

A few minutes ago, I tested it with another machine and another browser, with the same error.

Tested with Firefox and MS Edge on 2 different Win10 PC.

I just tested uploading a photo of 17,6MB, and the effect (getting "Service Temporarily Unavailable
Our servers are currently under maintenance or experiencing a technical problem. Please try again in a few minutes.") is still there.

FYI, my test subject was this image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Englischer_Garten_Meiningen,_Gruftkapelle_-_2020-04-29_HBP.jpg
The actual upload, after the failed test with Special:Upload, was done with the Upload wizard. But I still prefer the Special:Upload form, as it gives me more leverage on the {{Information}} template contents.

Thanks for reporting the issue @Grand-Duc, from what I'm seeing your request to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload triggered a 503 on mediawiki (mw-web.codfw.main-d8647bfd6-dqt9f) after ~250 seconds.

This could be related to T374436, I'm tagging the right team to handle this

Info: the issue is still there. I tried to upload a new version of File:Mühle_Oberding_01.png and I'm always getting this:

Error: 503, Backend fetch failed at Tue, 01 Jul 2025 09:22:38 GMT

The new PNG sits at 21,8 MB and won't upload.
