Aim
We recently invited editors and global functionaries on the 12 minor pilot wikis to give us their feedback about temporary accounts. This task is to analyse and summarise the survey responses.
Background (survey plan)
Goals for survey:
- Uncover feedback that could be useful to plan future improvements
- Identify what we can do better for the next round of deployment
- Demonstrate impact of the project
Survey languages: Chinese, English, Italian, Norwegian (bokmál), Romanian, Persian, Serbian, Swahili
User story
As TSP, we want to gather feedback from editors and functionaries on the minor pilot wikis, in order to identify what to improve and understand the impact of the project.
Exec summary (slides)
- 54 responses from 11 wikis across 8 languages. 87% of respondents have extended rights.
- Communications about Temporary Accounts were well understood (83%) and considered useful (69%).
- Most users (81%) reported high to moderate satisfaction with the current features of Temporary Accounts, however 19% felt less satisfied. Similarly, while 72% experienced no disruption to their on-wiki tasks, 20% reported disruption.
- Positive comments included those from users who understood that Temporary Accounts protect the privacy of editors and that in cases of vandalism, IP addresses can be quickly displayed.
- A minority remain resistant to Temporary Accounts and would prefer not to enable them. One concern is that temporary accounts do not bring useful contributions and are more likely to be used by vandals.
- Anti-abuse tools need further work: IP Info was cited by some as being inaccessible to patrollers with no admin rights and as showing unreliable or confusing data, Global Contributions does not work properly, and enabling IP Reveal is not intuitive.
- Improvements have been suggested, some of which the Trust & Safety Product team are already working on or plan to work on:
- Auto-revealing IPs
- AbuseFilter
- Ensuring Global Contributions is feature complete
- Onboarding dialog to explain how to enable IP Reveal.
- Other suggestions include:
- Improving the effectiveness of blocks (planned for FY 25–26 as WE4.2)
- Showing when temporary accounts are connected
- Providing further communications to address concerns over the benefits of temporary accounts.
