Cat-a-lot mobile accessibility review
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

It is expected that Cat-a-lot is compatible with Minerva skin (Wikimedia's mobile skin) and should be usable when using the mobile interface on a computer. However, it is unknown what works and what doesn't when it used with phone or tablet. It is reasonable to expect issues, but the extent of the problems and what needs to be fixed should be investigated.

The longer-term plan is to update from jQuery UI to Codex (see T389737) and improve the UI to be mobile-friendly. This review will support that effort as well.

Hi @Zache,

I tested the Cat-a-lot gadget on Wikimedia Commons using the Minerva skin (mobile view), and here are my findings:

  • The Cat-a-lot panel is visible in the bottom right corner, similar to desktop, but it could be visually improved for a better mobile experience.
  • Category input fields work smoothly, and there are no issues with entering or selecting categories.
  • A major bottleneck: Selecting files (single or multiple) does not work in mobile view, making it difficult to use Cat-a-lot for categorization on mobile.
  • All other buttons are easily tappable, with no major usability concerns.
  • In MediaSearch view, all functionalities appear to be working correctly.
  • No critical layout issues, but some UI/UX enhancements could improve usability on smaller screens.

Would you like me to start working on any specific fixes, especially regarding file selection on mobile? Let me know how I can contribute further! 😊

Hey @Zache
I have documented my findings in detail, highlighting the issues, potential improvements, and suggestions for enhancing mobile usability.

This review should help in making the interface more mobile-friendly. Let me know if any additional feedback or clarification is required!

@Nidhicodes and @Shellygarg10 : Thank you very much about the testing and sorry about delay in answering for @Nidhicodes review . Also thank you for @Shellygarg10:s specifically for the screenshots. The Cat-a-lot actually works lot better what I have expected (my expectations were pretty low). Also it was delightful to know that mediasearch was working as there could have been race conditions with Vue:s normal events when initialized.

I think that proper path for the action would be

  1. List add search button to the categoryseach so there is clickable button for it.
  2. Solve why file selection wont work in mobile view (this is the biggest blocker afaik)
  3. Fixing the dialog boxes to be responsive
  4. About panel height, I think that it will solved in T388118. The ticket currently would require testing.

In any case I will make tickets for the subtasks.

@Shellygarg10 @Nidhicodes . Hi i made subtasks for this. I made you both as assigned and co-assigned but I assinged Nidhicodes to first in T390487 and T390490. This was because Nidhicodes was done this first and because Shellygarg10 was interested earlier on T389858. With this I tried to little bit balance that that you both have something to do.

In other ways I do not have preference which one of you are doing these tasks and both were succesfully done this.

Sure @Zache , will keep you updated on the assigned task, thank you!

Thanks for the update @Zache! I appreciate you balancing the tasks between us. I’ll be happy to contribute to both alongside @Nidhicodes
