MinT for Wiki Readers: check localization status for target languages
Open, In Progress, MediumPublic4 Estimated Story Points

Description

As part of the experiment planned for MinT for Wiki Readers, we want to expose the feature to 4 (T390023) and 13 Wikipedias (T388402).
MinT for Wiki Readers is intended to help users to learn more from languages they don't speak. In this context, it is important for the UI of the tool to be available in the language of the user.

This ticket proposes to:

  • Check the translation status for the MinT for Wiki Readers UI messages.
  • Ping local translators when messages lack translations to the selected languages.

Based on the status of translations and timelines, we can determine whether the goal is to reach 100% localization for all messages, or focus on a sub-set of key messages.

Event Timeline

Pginer-WMF triaged this task as Medium priority.

While we've gone ahead with the rollout, the localization status for target language is quite poor:

  1. Asturian - Almost 100%
  2. Lombard - 0%
  3. Venetian - 0%
  4. Tswana - 0%

Based on the data, this is the status of localization for the UI in the languages of the 13 pilot wikis:

#WikiLocalization percentage
1Korean (ko)50%
2Thai (th)0%
3Greek (el)7%
4Icelandic (is)0%
5Sinhala (si)0%
6Khmer (km)0%
7South Azerbaijani (azb)0%
8Igbo (ig)0%
9Minangkabau (min)0%
10Central Bikol (bcl)0%
11Amharic (am)0%
12Fula (ff)0%
13Fon (fon)0%

@UOzurumba we may want to check with some of the multilingual users from these Wikipedias if they can help with the localization so that monolingual users in need for machine translation can get the UI in their language.

Okay, will work on this.

Thanks for helping with this. I already see some improvements in the percentages of localization based on the data. This is the current status of localization for the UI in the languages of the 13 pilot wikis:

#WikiLocalization percentage
1Korean (ko)100%
2Thai (th)85%
3Greek (el)100%
4Icelandic (is)0%
5Sinhala (si)100%
6Khmer (km)0%
7South Azerbaijani (azb)0%
8Igbo (ig)0%
9Minangkabau (min)0%
10Central Bikol (bcl)0%
11Amharic (am)0%
12Fula (ff)0%
13Fon (fon)0%

Based on the data, this is the current status of localization for the UI in the languages of the 13 pilot wikis:

#WikiLocalization percentage
1Korean (ko)100%
2Thai (th)89%
3Greek (el)100%
4Icelandic (is)0%
5Sinhala (si)100%
6Khmer (km)0%
7South Azerbaijani (azb)0%
8Igbo (ig)100%
9Minangkabau (min)0%
10Central Bikol (bcl)0%
11Amharic (am)0%
12Fula (ff)0%
13Fon (fon)0%

The localization is complete for 4 languages, very advanced in one, and totally absent for 8 languages.

The recent report for the initial MinT for Wikipedia pre-pilot wikis (T391365) suggests that the localization completion can be a factor that affects the usage of the tool:

  • Overall, Asturian Wikipedia showed the most interaction with the feature, both in terms of overall events logged and views to machine translated and human created content.
    • It is also worth noting that, at the time of deployment, only Asturian Wikipedia had 100% localization of the feature (T390043#10724728), and the largest almost all the four pre-pilot wikis.

Machine translation can be particularly useful to those users not fluent in the languages with most Wikipedia content coverage, such as English. Thus, we could expect that exposing UI messages in English could be a barrier for those users to access the feature.

Based on that, we may want to continue checking with some of the multilingual users from these Wikipedias if they can help with the localization.

Based on the data, this is the current status of localization for the UI in the languages of the 13 pilot wikis:

#WikiLocalization percentage
1Korean (ko)100%
2Thai (th)96%

10Central Bikol (bcl)0%
11Amharic (am)100%
12Fula (ff)0%
13Fon (fon)5%

The localization is complete for 6 languages, very advanced in one, and totally absent for 5 languages.

@UOzurumba we haven't had an update for this in progress task two months. What's the next step here? Check once more the current status?

I have sent another round of requests to translatewiki.net translators in Fula, Icelandic, Central Bikol, South Azerbaijani and Khmer. Hopefully, they will help with the translations. However, some of these Wikis don't have recent translation activities in translatewiki.net
