Provide data on eswiki "Add an image" structured tasks
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Add an image was enabled at Wikipedia in Spanish in February 2022. In an on-going discussion in the Café, some community members feel both tasks of "add an image" (in article and section-level) put the newcomer's tenure above all else, regardless of the burden on patrollers, which has led some of these users to propose the deactivation of the features.

In order for the community to be able to make an informed decision about the convenience of mantaining Add an image features enabled in eswiki, an admin requested “to have statistics not so much on editor retention but rather on the retention/non-reversion of those edits in the short and medium term”.

To answer this request, please provide updated data which includes the revert rate of Add an image (in article and section-level) edits compared to the revert rate of other newcomer edits in eswiki in the last 6 months.

As this question could be asked by other communities, I think it would be worthwhile to have that data for all languages where this feature is enabled. We found create a Data section at the end of https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Growth/Personalized_first_day/Structured_tasks/Add_an_image

I agree that it would be nice to make this data more available, but I don't think it's very meaningful unless it's up-to-date.

Technically any community can actually get metrics on reverts themselves from:
https://grafana.wikimedia.org/d/bSDW0wJ7z/growth-team-product-kpis?orgId=1
(By comparing the "Save" data vs. the "Revert" data.)

Luckily I pulled similar data for German Wikipedia recently: T385103: Provide data on dewiki "add link" structured task, so pulling data for Spanish Wikipedia is relatively easy.

The data provided below is narrowed by:

  • Time frame: Sep 1, 2024 - Mar 1, 2025
  • Edits narrowed to: Project: es.wikipedia
  • User Tenure Bucket: <90 days
  • Edit Count Bucket: <100 edits
  • Namespace: Mainspace (article) edits

In other words, we've narrowed to somewhat recent data, and we're only looking at edits from "newer" editors, since we that's the intended audience for the "Add an Image" task.

FilterTotal Edit CountTotal Edit Count RevertedRevert Percentage
ALL edits (No edit tag filter)140,86038,07527.03%
Narrowed to edits with the Suggested: add images edit tag722324.43%
Narrowed to edits with the Suggested: add images to sections edit tag891535.95%

The newcomer revert rate on Spanish Wikipedia appears to be relatively high, around 27%.
"Add an Image" edits have a significantly lower revert rate compared to general newcomer edits.

KStoller-WMF moved this task from Incoming to Doing on the Growth-Team (Current Sprint) board.

@IZapico-WMF - I'm going to mark this as resolved, but let me know if other data questions come up.
