[FY26-WE.3.1.] Research to understand the discovery needs of Wikipedia readers
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Draft scope

  • Wikipedia
  • Beyond the main namespace (article pages)
  • Logged out users
  • To include the possibility of pulling knowledge from other languages
  • Entry point for future experimentation can be https://www.wikipedia.org/

Product requirements
There are no strict product requirements at the moment. We are in very very early stages of research. However, the Reading Web team has offered to give us some ideas about how a product for Discovery can look like based on some early conversations we had in February as part of Annual Planning conversations. The more product guidance we can receive, the more we can scope the project further. However, this should not be a blocker to start learning about the reader discovery needs and we can further scope with the information we have as needed.

Draft output

  • Clarity on what readers need with regards to Discovery now
  • A set of hypothesis informed by quantitative and qualitative user research for research and experimentation starting July 2025.

Draft methods

  • Desk research and literature review
  • Surveys
  • Interviews
  • quantitative analyses of webrequest logs (that include search) and search sessions of logged out users.

Background
Our hypothesis is that if we offer a new discovery experience to readers, likely powered by AI, we can meaningfully increase the retention of WP readers on the platform.

Event Timeline

leila triaged this task as High priority.

Confirming that I've begun reviewing this task. I'm putting together a list of questions to clarify with Leila next week, which will help unblock us on planning.

Updates:

  • I've created a few subtasks to better capture the work we currently expect for this. Note a current gap/need is that we still need support for T391112 (no assignee yet added).
  • We've begun work on some initial desk research (captured in T391115) to support planning.
  • Work has started on research brief (captured in T391121)
  • This week there were some early conversations about further defining this work; a few highlights of points here:
    • Focus is intended to be more 'advanced' or 'deep' readers of Wikipedia (vs. 'casual'). There is need for work to further define such categories and definitions.
    • 'Discovery' includes search, but is currently being thought of as a category that is broader than traditional search alone.
    • One broad question motivating request appears to be better understanding reader needs

Next steps:

  • Coordinate with Reading Web & Search teams to understand their perspectives and goals for work; some examples of questions we need answered are:
    • Need to understand what is meant by "ideas about how a product discovery can look"
    • Need to clarify what main quant questions are that need to be answered
  • Confirm who will support T391112; coordinate with this individual particularly in regards to research brief and desk research that has started
  • Create project Meta page

I've assigned a few subtasks to @TRooks-WMF , who will be helping lead work (especially design research work) for this project, but I'll be continuing to work with and support her as we get things set up and planned.

Updates:

  • Initial draft of research brief completed, but some additional stakeholder input and revisions are needed
  • Continued work on annotated bibliography; emphasis on previous research on readers
  • Meeting with stakeholders from Reading Web team on 15 April, and expect a few additional stakeholder interviews to take place next week
  • We had some productive async conversations with folks this week, but scheduling any meetings was blocked due to Core Experiences offsite taking place
  • Meeting with @Isaac on 15 April to discuss potential quant work. (Flagging here for awareness that we still don't have someone assigned to T391112)
  • Following the aforementioned meetings and some revisions to research brief, we plan to create a project meta page next week

Updates:

  • Met with representatives from product to gather input on the direction of the project
  • Met with Isaac to discuss possible directions to take with some exploratory quantitative analysis; a promising direction was identified (and included in research brief); if this is the direction we go, some additional scoping and support will be needed from @Isaac
  • Met with Bethany to discuss participant recruitment options and other research ops logistics
  • Significant headway was made on the annotated bibliography; expected to wrap up next week following the inclusion of some additional sources identified
  • Based on various inputs noted above, the research brief was further refined and sent to @leila for review
  • In the process of scheduling some informational interviews with WMF staff next week

It looks like Search Platform isn't needed on this specific ticket. We'll keep watching from afar, ping us if you need help from us!

Easikingarmager changed the task status from Open to In Progress.Jul 8 2025, 6:49 PM

Please note that the most recent updates are being provided at the one subtask that remains open (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T391114).

The project shareout has been completed and the report is posted to Metawiki. Closing now.
