Enable GrowthExperiments on selected small wikis (FY 25/26 WE2.1)
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

User Story:

As a newcomer on Wikipedia, I want access to the Newcomer Homepage and other Growth features, because they help me get started.

As an experienced Wikimedian, I want newcomers on my wiki to have access to Growth features, because then more new account holders will successfully get started editing and be retained.

Background:

The GrowthExtension is not automatically included when new Wikipedias "graduate" from the incubator, so there are some newer wikis that still don't have access to Growth features. Let's work with these communities to set up the features (via Special:CommunityConfiguration) and release Growth features at these wikis.

This task is part of the Wikimedia Foundation department's OKR (Objectives and Key Results) work. It is connected to the Language Onboarding and Development Project and the Vital Knowledge (WE2) objective. Some interventions may also relate to other objectives and key results.

Vital Knowledge (WE2) Objective: Make more vital knowledge available and well illustrated across languages and topics. Part of the Wikimedia Foundation’s Annual Plan 2025-26.
Key result WE2.1: By the end of Q2, implement 3 interventions that help contributors to improve the state of vital content on their Wikipedias.

Updates related to ongoing experiments will be added in the comments of this task and here:

Acceptance Criteria:

BLOCKED: by decision on which wikis to include in this experiment.

Once wikis have been selected:

  • Release GrowthExperiences to these wikis, with Structured Tasks disabled

Movement Communications will then follow-up to assist these wikis in configuring features via Community Configuration.

@KStoller-WMF a minor one, as the goal is to "improve vital content" in smaller wikis,..we have identified the structured tasks module is the primary module to be enabled. @srishakatux will be in touch, simply FYI for now

we have identified the structured tasks module is the primary module to be enabled.

Do you mean the Suggested Edits module?
As long as the selected wikis are using maintenance templates or willing to start using maintenance templates, I think this should be fine.

If you mean the Suggested Edits module needs to be enabled and both Structured Tasks need to be enabled, that might work for some wikis, but not others. For example, the "Add a Link" model needs to be trained on links that already exist within articles on a wiki, so there is a Machine Learning dependency and a chance that some wikis will be too small for the model to be properly trained.

An alternate add-a-link algorithm that is not based on machine learning was developed recently and documented here. Depending on the languages we choose, it can be tested - there is a tool to visualize the suggestions as well
