This is a nonspecific parent task to collect various ideas for improving the rate of accounts (either across the entire userbase, or some specific subset like admins) who have a working email address associated with the account.
A working email account is beneficial in a number of ways:
- makes it easier to communicate with the user (especially with inactive users who still need to be reached for some reason)
- allows account recovery if the user accidentally locks themselves out, or gets locked out due to an account takeover attempt
- allows the use of email verification on suspicious logins (e.g. via MediaWiki-extensions-EmailAuth)
Users might not have working emails for various reasons:
- they never provided an email address
- they provided one but didn't confirm it
- they had a working email address but removed it
- they had a working email address but it's not working anymore MediaWiki-extensions-BounceHandler unconfirmed out
- they had a working email address but it's not working anymore (or is reliably sent to spam) without MediaWiki being aware of it
