[Session] Collaboratively adding metadata to hackathon photos
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Related to T387884 - we have many photos of past hackathons that aren't described or categorised yet, and we will add more during this hackathon. For example, the people in the photos at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_Hackathon_2024_-_Closing_session could be identified in descriptions and categorised appropriately. Would it be worth collaboratively working through past photographs to improve their metadata?

Related is the general question of what level of identification of attendees in photos is appropriate - should we name everyone in descriptions, have Commons categories and Wikidata items for everyone, or should people be anonymous even if they are happy with photographs? What level of metadata is appropriate here?

If we run it as a session, here's a potential outline:

  • Title of session: Collaboratively adding metadata to hackathon photos

  • Username for contact: Mike Peel
  • Session duration (up to 90min): 30-60 minutes

  • Any other details to share?:

Event Timeline

Hi @Mike_Peel - I think this would be great to do as a long unconference session, maybe on Friday morning after the opening session? We can block out a full hour for the workshop.

Hi! This session will be 45 minutes from 11:45-12:30pm on Friday, May 2nd. Please refer to the program for updated details. Thank you!

At the start of the session we talked through the examples of:

There was a lot of conversation. Some of the outcomes were (with thanks to Vira for some of the notes):

  • Tell users to categorise themselves (e.g., in 'Category:Name at Wikimedia Hackathon 2024", which is less potentially controversial than just 'Category:Name') - it's an indication to others who can then create the overall category and Wikidata item
  • If you're in doubt whether a person should be newly categorised, play safe and don't create a category; there are other things to do on Commons
  • If you want to, you may contact a person and ask them
  • Public figures have no choice *shrug*
  • Maybe there should be a separate colour of lanyard for people that are happy to be photographed at the event but not identified
  • Maybe event organisers should more specifically make sure that permission is given to name attendees in photograph metadata
  • Example of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Informed_consent_to_be_photographed.pdf used by VisibleWikiWomen
  • Maybe AI in the future will just identify everyone anyway...

The discussion should be ongoing at this and future events, there are no definite answers here yet. Other attendees should also feel free to add their thoughts here!
