The limit for the publication of fast unreviewed translations (T331023) was introduced to avoid users publishing translations in a quick sequence without spending a minimum of time reviewing them (either while translating them or after being published).
This was aimed at preventing a pattern identified during some contests, where some users were motivated by the prize and focused too much on quantity over quality.
However, the current system may be getting in the way of some legitimate cases. Some users publish an initial version of the contents and use the translation tool to continue the translation with other parts of the same article, or work in multiple iterations. Currently, the warning is also triggered when continuing an in-progress translation, and when retranslating the same contents again.
This ticket proposes to make the following adjustments:
- Allow continuing an existing translation. Do not block users when continuing an existing in-progress translation (for article or section). The message about "initiating a new translation" may be confusing when the user is continuing the work on an existing one.
- Allow re-translating the same contents. Do not block users from translating again a piece of content (article or section) that they have already published a translation for in the past. For example, if a user publishes an initial version of the Paneer article, and wants to select it again, it is preferred not to block them since they are in their way to actually spend more time with the same translation (which is what the limit is intended to encourage).
If these adjustments are technically complex to achieve, we can explore some approximations.
