cirrussearch2078 (R440 Config D, Row/Rack B2) unable to PXE boot
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hello DC Ops/IF,

I'm having a bear of a time getting cirrussearch2078 to reimage. Steps taken so far:

  • Change the PXE boot device from onboard NIC to Broadcom NIC (the broadcom is the active NIC, so I think this is correct)
  • Update BIOS, iDRAC, and NIC firmware to the latest versions provided by the firmware cookbook
  • Update NIC firmware to the latest version available from Dell's website (Network_Firmware_J8X0M_WN64_23.21.6_01.EXE)
  • Toggle UEFI and BIOS mode
  • try TFTP or HTTP options for reimage

When I tcpdump from install2004, I only see DHCP traffic going one way:

    10.193.0.1.67 > 208.80.153.105.67: UDP, length 278
22:07:54.599775 IP (tos 0xc0, ttl 62, id 43190, offset 0, flags [none], proto UDP (17), length 311)
    10.193.0.1.67 > 208.80.153.105.67: UDP, length 283
^C

However, I don't know enough about PXE to say if that's normal or not. Is anyone able to help out with this one?

Thanks in advance for your time. Ping me in IRC (inflatador) if you need more info.

Assigning to @Papaul per our IRC conversation in #wikimedia-dcops . One thing I forget to mention is that this server just moved its VLAN as part of a reimage, so that could possibly be a factor.

Thanks again for looking!

@Papaul Unfortunately, the reimage failed again. I'm here for a few more hours and will keep trying. If it doesn't work, what would be the next steps here?

I've tried again a few times with

sudo cookbook sre.hosts.reimage --new --os bullseye cirrussearch2078 -t T388610, with and without --use-http-for-dhcp. The server still can't PXE boot. If y'all have any further suggestions let me know.

I will take a look at it when I am on site. Thank you

Per IRC conversation with @Papaul , he was able to get PXE booting to work without any manual steps. I've confirmed it's working, so I'm closing this ticket out. Thanks for your help!
