Expected behavior
Unsure what the feasible solution is here. Either

  • Do not show notifications in the Apps that are greyed out in Preferences
  • Allow folks to toggle this setting on and off in Preferences, and make sure the Apps notifications actually respect it

Mh, I think there are two separate issues here:

  1. If a notification type is not enabled for the apps, then it should not show up in the apps.
    • => We should figure out why this is happening with that "Try suggested edits notification". Is it in the wrong channel? Is the disabled-state in the apps not working?
    • This seems like a purely technical issue. Not sure if the bug is in GrowthExperiments or Echo or The Apps. (I suspect GE)
  1. Should we allow the users to enable Growth Notifications for the Apps?
    • this seems like a Product/UX decision to make. (@KStoller-WMF , @AAlhazwani-WMF on the Growth side, respective people on the Apps side)
    • Maybe we may want some more fine-grained control than just "Growth"? But beware of cognitive overload.

Note that these notifications are intended to also be touched by Growth as part of our secondary Q4 hypothesis: T389017: Design Exploration: Get Started Notification(s)

HNordeenWMF moved this task from Needs Triage to Tracking on the Wikipedia-iOS-App-Backlog board.

Should we allow the users to enable Growth Notifications for the Apps?

When creating this notification category, we attempted to exclude the Apps. Given that the Growth team is focused on web and mobile web audiences, our notifications will likely be fairly web-specific and app users might find them confusing or disruptive. If Growth develops notifications that are more global, then perhaps they should be part of a different notification category?

@HNordeenWMF I'm moving this to Triaged for Growth, assuming you don't need Growth to work on this, but let me know if I'm mistaken!

@KStoller-WMF If we keep the current status quo of only 1-2 notifications from the growth team, then it's ok if this is not prioritized. However if the Growth team decides to roll out additional or more frequent notifications, lets please revisit.

@HNordeenWMF - sounds good.

Short-term, Growth will ensure we include apps in the QA:
T392257: QA for "Get Started" notifications on the Wikipedia Mobile Apps

Long-term, let's revisit this if we add more notifications to the "Growth features" notification preference.
