IP Information tool no longer showing "IP information for this address cannot be retrieved since no edits have been made from it." but instead shows information
Closed, DeclinedPublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

What happens?:

  • There used to be an error saying "IP information for this address cannot be retrieved since no edits have been made from it.", but there isn't anymore. Now it shows information about the IP after loading for ~3 seconds. However from my view, I can only see the Location, Version, Active Blocks, and Information as usual

What should have happened instead?:

  • Show the error saying "IP information for this address cannot be retrieved since no edits have been made from it".

Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):

This is expected, see T380221: Allow authorised users to see IP Info for actors if the IP exists in the CheckUser or AbuseFilter tables, or has contributions.

There might be a reasonable request to have some sort of "this IP is relevant but you may not have the permissions to see how" message displayed for an IP without obvious contributions. I don't think that message makes sense for arbitrary future users who will come and know nothing of the one year or so in which we had the infobox as it was. So I'd be inclined not to include that kind of message.

I'm sure the older message is still accessible when filter hits / CU table are not present (in addition to there being no edits), so that maybe should be changed to "no actions" rather than "no edits", so this task might be repurposed for that reason. But otherwise, this task seems invalid-ish.

Agree with Izno. But I can reproduce the slow loading time for IPs in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:AbuseLog?wpSearchUser=&wpSearchPeriodStart=&wpSearchPeriodEnd=&wpSearchTitle=&wpSearchImpact=2&wpSearchAction=edit&wpSearchActionTaken=&wpSearchEntries=0&wpSearchFilter= without actual edits, took 5-30 seconds checking different IPs, while the IP inbox loads right away for random IPs with valid edits.

I can reproduce that (but probably needs a separate task, which I can file a bit later). Example profile data https://performance.wikimedia.org/xhgui/run/view?id=6811c05e0d7e3f4c23c47f2b

Yes, I left a comment about the slowness at T380221#10687858 a month ago and my current impression is that T390716 is supposed to improve it.

Sorry that we missed that comment, and thank you for noting it.

The underlying cause was a bit different from T390716, which will be apparent a bit later when T392976 is public.

I'm going to call this as declined because I think this behaviour is intentional.
