Build realtime features for the MediaWiki homepage

Description

Leverage Wikimedia data streams to build novel "live" experiences on the homepage.

Some of the experiences we will try to build:

  • Trending topics
  • Currently being actively edited
  • Articles rising from the depths

To do this we intend to leverage these apis:

  • The MediaWiki Action API
  • The Wikimedia Query Service API

We may construct a basic infrastructure for consuming and storing the event streams, or we might take a less durable approach with a mostly front-end experience.

The goal is mainly to produce a compelling new, live-feeling feature for the Wikipedia home page.
