Context:
This focus area supports the ability for communities to align, complement, and interconnect their ontologies across Wikibase instances. It includes technical foundations like entity matching and federated statements, as well as social and governance work needed to make federation sustainable, community-driven, and inclusive. The goal is to create clear, equitable paths for sharing and connecting knowledge across the ecosystem without centralizing control.
Relevant Objectives:
Under Represented Knowledge:
- WMF 2025/26: Users holding and contributing marginalized knowledge find the Wikibase LOD ecosystem (Wikidata + Suite + Cloud) attractive for their use cases (CC2)
Connecting knowledge across the ecosystem:
- WMF 2025/26: The ability to federate knowledge across instances has improved, creating a viable path for taking load off of Wikidata. (GW3)
- WMDE 2025: The ability to federate knowledge across instances has improved, creating a viable path for taking load off of Wikidata. (This objective is shared with Wikidata and Wikibase Cloud.)
- WMDE 2025: Wikidata and Wikibase communities have clarity about the future social and technical boundaries and scope of Wikidata and the Wikibase Ecosystem, allowing them to make informed decisions on where and how to host their data. (This objective is shared with Wikidata and Wikibase Cloud.)
