"Page changed" notification email should stress the diff link more strongly
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where):

  1. When "Email me when a page or a file on my watchlist is changed" setting is enabled, emails sent should have the diff link stressed (e.g. bold).
  2. As part of this, probably you need to send these letters in HTML by default (I couldn't figure out a way to receive these letters in HTML). Sending letters in HTML could imply moving the setting to the "Notifications" page (not sure about that) which is arguably the right place for it, see T68965: Have watchlist email setting in "Notifications" tab in Special:Preferences.

Use case(s):
A thing that annoys me in the current page-changed notifications is that I'm always lost when figuring out which link to click to see the changes. I have to read the letter, even though I just need the link; I don't need text. E.g.:

Really many links here! Which one is the main one??

I believe the absolute majority of users open these letters for the link only. So people have to develop a reflex to find the link in the second paragraph and click it.

Another thought: Make the diff link the first article link as opposed to the second, as it's more important. That could be done in the plain text format as well.

Benefits:

  • Improved UX of page-changed notification letters, as per Use case.
  • Apart from bolding, other aspects of the email could be tweaked once it's in HTML.

emails sent should have the diff link in bold.

The semantic concept of bold does not exist in every language I'm afraid. (I very much agree with the problem description though!)

Aklapper renamed this task from "Page changed" notification letters should show the diff link in bold to "Page changed" notification email should stress the diff link more strongly.Jun 8 2025, 9:00 PM
