Request creation of lemmy VPS project
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Project Name: lemmy

Developer account usernames of requestors: Gryllida, 1 more TBC

Purpose: news aggregator to get Wikipedians who are writing current events, and Wikinewsies, more engaged in discussions and editing the wiki. I anticipate user retention may improve. A trial of 3 to 6 months should suffice to assess the impact.

Brief description: It will be invite-only initially to reduce risk of spam, until enough mods are recruited. Low bandwidth, low disk space required. http://join-lemmy.org

How soon you are hoping this can be fulfilled: up to 4 weeks for setup (1 week should be enough but I am being over cautious in case issues are identified)

Original task description:

For working on Wikipedia and Wikinews I would like to setup lemmy, a news aggregator. I am hoping users will be able to login with same login as Wikipedia, and get more engaged in discussions and editing the wiki. It will be invite-only initially to reduce risk of spam, until enough mods are available. In this ticket I would like to request a vps for this task. I expect the trial to last between 3 and 6 months after which I can write a summary report of how it impacted on-wiki activities.

Thanks. Why should we host another discussion platform, as there are already many of them? This sounds like further audience fragmentation to me?

@Aklapper which ones are already there in addition to ... mailing list, irc, and phab?

Unfortunately closing this Phabricator task as no further information has been provided.

@Gryllida: After you have provided the information asked for and if this is still wanted, please set the status of this task back to "Open" via the Add Action...Change Status dropdown. Thanks!
