It builds on work that started in FY24-25 such as T390257: [FY26-WE.3.1.] Research to understand the discovery needs of Wikipedia readers and includes foundational work to inform where to focus and what is most needed to attract, engage and retain current and potential readers. It may also include more shorter-term Product support where relevant. This task mainly serves to connect related projects and updates will not be common here.

Martin, Mike, and Yu-Ming put together some Q1 reflections for this area.

What was achieved in Q1:

  • Completed research on user needs for collecting personal content on WP (T394942)

-Presented Research Showcase on readership research (more)
-Developed 3 approaches for prioritizing articles for simplification (T399567)

  • Created semantic search prototype (T404201, tool), started lit review on usage of search on and off Wikipedia (T404848)

What impact happened because of these actions in Q1?

  • “Collections” research gave Reader Experiences team confidence to build feature that supports saving more than articles.
  • Reader Teams have starting point for conversations with communities about problem of difficult-to-read content
  • ML was able to deliver an early prototype of semantic search
  • Showcase gave useful synthesis to those newer to Readers space
