[FY25-26 Research Team] Develop, maintain, and see the execution of a Research roadmap for implemeting AI strategy for editors
Open, HighPublic

Description

Context: Wikimedia Foundation's strategy for supporting editors with AI is described in the AI Strategy for Editors document. Implementing the strategy (between July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2028) will require investments by many teams across the organization, including the Research team. Developing, maintaining/updating, and seeing the execution of a Research roadmap is essential to make sure the components that need to be done by the Research team are scheduled, staffed, and coordinated in a timely manner. This responsibility is delegated to @Miriam by @leila. This epic maps to the Sustainable Infrastructure Priority in the WMF Annual Plan for FY26.

Next deliverable:

  • Research roadmap for AI Strategy for Editors by mid-December, 2025. Format TBD.

How:

  • A priority for the Research Leadership team. The Research roadmap will include the work of all the Research team on this front. It can include work related to investments in the research community, recommendations on how to do human centered AI development, user research, all the way to building evaluation datasets and tuning LLMs for the prioritized areas.
  • The sequencing of some items in the roadmap will be informed by product roadmaps. Coordination and collaboration with group product managers and directors in relevant areas will be key (and already started in some areas as of October 2025).

Measure of success: to be updated.

A note about my recent updates on this task:

  • Miriam and I made some good progress on this task during July-September 2025. One of the highlights of that work was working with a group product manager to learn about their vision for implementing the AI strategy and their draft timelines. The other was that by spending some time on this task, we learned what is not clear and should be made clearer about it moving forward. To that end, I made some changes in the task now after coordinating with Miriam.
  • I put the focus of this task primarily on developing, maintaining and seeing the execution of a Research Roadmap related to the AI strategy for editors.
  • I made it clear that the focus is not an Applied Science roadmap but that I ask Miriam to lean on other leaders in the team for helping her with developing the roadmap which will include all of the work of the research team on this front.
  • Miriam and I now have bi-weekly check-ins about this work for me to support her where she may benefit from it.

Miriam, thank you for your work during Q1 on this front and thank you for iterating with me on this delegation. I look forward to see the evolution and impact of this line of work.

Recent updates:

  • More alignment created across Research and product teams
  • As a result, we have a shareable version of a draft roadmap, which has already been reviewed by Applied Science and Design Research and is now out for review to ML and Head of Research.
  • A few tasks around early experimentation have already started:
    • Recsys for Patrollers T398071
    • AI for Mentorship: data and initial tool T397550
    • AI-assisted tools for information retrieval T398482

@Miriam thank you very much for the work throughout the quarter and preparing the draft. I created T413081 to track the review work. If you need the feedback earlier than the deadline on the task, please adjust. thanks.
