Enable volunteers to see the text that prompted Tone Check to be shown
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

This task involves the work of enabling volunteers [i] to see, on-wiki, the exact text someone wrote that caused Tone Check to be presented to them.

Thank you to @Chaotic_Enby and @Soda for initially raising this idea.

Stories

As an patroller/reviewer motivated to ensure that Tone Check is not inadvertently enabling people acting in bad faith to become more effective at disguising destructive/vandalistic edits, I would value seeing the text someone wrote that caused Tone Check to become activated so that I can use this information to make a more informed assessment about the intentions with which someone published the edit I am in the process of reviewing.

NOTE: @Chaotic_Enby, @Soda, and I are talking about the potential value/purpose of this functionality on-wiki here.

Open questions

  • 1. What permissions/roles someone would need in order to be able to see/access the information this task is proposing to make available?
  • 2. What types of edits would this information be made available for? Published? Unpublished (related: T395166)? Both?

Event Timeline

I would be quite concerned about us storing any content that a user entered before they published their revision. In the case of tone check, that they have entered before they have even expressed any intent towards publishing it.

As a boring hypothetical example that wouldn’t involve any bad motives from the user: imagine that I make a mistake and paste my phabricator password into VE, and because it’s a nice long phrase it turns out to be both a tone issue and indicate where it might be useful (“DLynch’s totally awesome phabricator password!”). Naturally, I notice this before I submit my edit — but maybe not before I’ve seen a tone check for it. I wouldn’t expect that submitting my edit after I’ve removed that accidental paste might result in it getting stored on Wikipedia servers and be viewable by sufficiently privileged patrolling users. Even less so that it might be stored and be available if I didn’t then publish the revision.
