Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):
- Open the iOS Wikipedia app
- Set the app interface language to Hong Kong Traditional Chinese (zh-hk)
- Use the in-app search function to look up a term (e.g., "反斗奇兵")
- Observe that the search results display article titles using Taiwan Traditional Chinese (zh-tw) instead of Hong Kong-specific variants
What happens?:
Search results are shown using Taiwan Chinese article titles, even though the app language is set to Hong Kong Chinese.
What should have happened instead?:
The search results should ideally prioritize titles or variants that match the user's selected language variant — in this case, Hong Kong Traditional Chinese (zh-hk).
Software version (on Special:Version page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):
Wikipedia iOS app version 7.7.6.5398
iOS version: 18.1.1
Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):
I checked out with Cooltey for the language point, and he adviced that this is expected behavior due to how the app surfaces the default article title (the title used when the article was first created).
Web search on zh.wikipedia.org returns the same default results:
