Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • Go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City
  • In the right column, look for the map whose caption says "Location within the state of NewYork". Notice how there's a red pin indicating the precise location of New York City
  • Click on the map to enlarge it to full-screen

What happens?:
The map goes full screen, but there's no pin anywhere. The whole purpose of the map was to show the location of a city in particular, but the pin indicating the location, which was visible in the thumbnail, is nowhere to be found in the full-size version. Which makes the entire thing useless and idiotic.

What should have happened instead?:
When seeing the map in full screen, the pin that was visible in the thumbnail should still be visible.

Software version (on Special:Version page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia): the one used by WikiPedia right now

Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.): tested on Chrome and Firefox

Here's another page where the same issue can be seen:
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capdepera

Basically every page about a geographical place, where there's a map that shows where that place is, exhibits this issue.

I don't know how I'm supposed to find the right project to tag. I typed "wikimedia" and these are the suggestions:

and these are the suggestions for "wikipedia":

This is not a software bug, but something that depends on the local template. The location map template can only place a pin in the thumbnail, it cannot display it in the full screen window (MediaViewer).

Sounds pretty similar to T375400. Some more technical background might be found in T176739.

Aklapper renamed this task from SVG maps with pins are stupid - pin only shown in thumb to Red pin / marker / dot on SVG maps only shown in thumbnail.Jul 25 2025, 4:27 PM

Thanks for reporting this. For future reference, please summarize a problem in the task title instead of describing your feelings about it. Thanks.

En wiki continuing to use pin maps instead of OSM maps is just a source of issues...

Anyway, a right enough solution to this is probably to mark up such images on wiki with the right noviewer class. Idr what the name exactly is.

Izno claimed this task.

There was prior intent in the module to have these removed from MediaViewer. I've fixed it according to the documentation. Subject to caching and such, these should no longer display in MediaViewer.

When is this expected to be rolled out to Wikipedia?

@php4funs @Izno fixed this for a specific module on English wikipedia. There is not general fix for this across all wikipedias, as described earlier in the conversation.
