Paste Check: Finalize UX copy
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Background goal

This task holds the work of finalizing the copy that will appear within the Paste Check user experience.

The Editing Team will prioritize work on this task after we conduct an initial set of usability tests with newcomers so that we are:

  • Thinking about the copy within the context of the UX we're preparing to evaluate through a controlled experiment (T399669)
  • Including findings from the usability tests we're venturing to run in (T400622)
NOTE: We will just update the copies in the card and declining survey of the Mid-edit moment.

Requirements

Event logging

What – if any – links we end up including in the card copy will need to have logging associated with them.

WARNING: @MNeisler to propose event name once copy is finalized.
User experience

Based on the findings from T400622: Usability test for Paste Check new flow, we will need to:

  • Update the copy in the initial card:
    • Use a friendlier tone in the message (e.g. “please don’t” instead of “do not”).
    • Mention potential consequences for publishing copied content (e.g. account could be blocked).
    • Explains that rephrasing or citing don't resolve the pasted content issue (previously being worked in T403065)
  • Update the decline survey card:
    • Clarify what “other editors” means. Are they editors of the same article or in general?
    • Add a definition/link/tooltip to explain copyright and plagiarism terms in the survey.

After exploring and discussing the new copies for the Paste Check and declining survey in Mid-edit, here is the decided updates. Now the copy includes:

  • Uses a more friendlier tone in the message
  • Explains that rephrasing or citing don't resolve the pasted content issue (included as body copy from T403065)
  • Mentions potential consequences for publishing copied content (edit being removed and account could being blocked)

@Esanders I've reviewed the copies updates in both the initial card and the decline survey and they look good. Thank you!

✅ Card Copies look good:

image.png (624×650 px, 65 KB)

past_check_submit_success_copy.png (242×620 px, 33 KB)

❌ Not part of this ticket but success copy message differ

Attached product copy has "Thank you for removing the pasted text", while implemented copy is "Thank you for removing this text!"

paste_check_remove_success_copy.png (144×572 px, 14 KB)

The "Thank you for removing the pasted text" is a bit clearer and more aligned with Paste Check. But anyway, the current "Thank you for removing this text!" is ok.

Great spots, @EAkinloose – let's consider this task resolved and address additional copy tweaks in T405816.

A few German Wikipedia users think that writing "your account being blocked" is a bit too much.
