Wikitext support for Codex icons and their components
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Feature summary

Request support for rendering Codex icons directly within wikitext. See § Use Codex icons in MediaWiki. This would allow editors and template authors to use the official Codex Wikimedia icon set in pages, templates, and other non-JavaScript environments. The goal is to improve visual consistency, accessibility, and localisation by enabling shared design assets in more editing contexts.

This is better than what happened with OOUI, where the individual icons were uploaded to Commons. And no one ever updated them: Category:OOUI icons and Template:OOUI icon.
Which has happened already: see Category:Wikimedia Codex icons.

Use case(s):

See Codex's documentation. No need for something like Template:OOUI icon.

Benefits:

  • Adding inline icons to template outputs (e.g., info boxes, navboxes), like with [[ |Template:Codex icon]] and [[ |Template:OOUI icons
  • Enhancing usability of help and documentation pages with visual cues
  • ? Supporting better multilingual icon rendering through Codex’s assets
  • Not hundreds of SVG icons on Commons that need to be manually updated...

See Talk:Codex discussion on this phab ticket.
