Rename language code "ro-md" from "Moldavian" to "Moldovan Romanian"
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hello, language code "ro-md" currently displays "Moldavian". This makes little sense, considering 1. "Moldavian" is an outdated spelling of "Moldovan", which fell into disuse after Moldova's independence, so in any case it should be replaced by the modern spelling; 2. We already have "mo" for "Moldovan" anyway, so this current arrangement produces two duplicates with different spelling, when both codes serve different purposes.

Just like for instance "en-ca" displays "Canadian English", I suggest this language code display "Moldovan Romanian". Please do not hestitate to write for any doubts or further explanations needed.

[mediawiki/extensions/cldr@master] Rename ro-md from "Moldavian" to "Moldovan Romanian"

What are the different purposes for ro-md and mo? Iana has:

Type: language
Subtag: mo
Description: Moldavian
Description: Moldovan
Added: 2005-10-16
Deprecated: 2008-11-22
Preferred-Value: ro
Suppress-Script: Latn

@Nikerabbit can you elaborate a bit on what information you require? I believe the purpose of the task was to simply put the naming in accordance with IETF language tags rules

The name is proposed to be changed to be different from mo (in addition to using the preferred spelling), but mo is deprecated in cldr and should probably be deprecated in MediaWiki too (unless there is a use case for keeping mo, hence I asked).

The 2 things are different IMHO:

  1. Everything related to mo should be deprecated, as you suggested
  2. The naming for ro-md (which I'm not sure where is used) should be put in accordance to the IETF rules.

The current tasks only covers 2 and is simply a technical change.

ro-md (which I'm not sure where is used)

Most probably as tag in Wikidata.

Ah, yes. There was a single user in 2024 who was adding lexemes using this language tag. There was a long discussion on @Gikü 's talk page and IIRC they eventually resorted to using ro-x-Q8209 because the intent was to refer to 19th century Romanian. Can we check if there are any ro-md entries left on Wikidata? Sparql doesn't seem to be fit for this, maybe a direct check in the dB?

Note that https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata%3ALexicographical_data/Statistics/Count_of_lexemes%2C_forms%2C_and_senses_by_language includes ro-md under Romanian as well

Basic math on the results from https://ordia.toolforge.org/language/Q7913 show about 57 lexemes with more than one form for Romanian. This likely includes ro-md and ro-X-..
