Inserting your Signature in VE takes three clicks, should be one
Closed, DeclinedPublicFeature

Description

I'd like to have a signature button in the talk page edit window, just like what used to exist in the old interface. Such a button would produce two hyphens and four tildas when clicked.

I used to use this button frequently in the old interface to sign my messages on various talk pages, and I am surprised that it was not only removed but also that it hasn't been added back to this day.

Such a button would provide an easy and convenient way to sign messages on talk pages.

@R8R: Thanks for reporting this and welcome to Phabricator. For future reference, please use the feature request form (linked from the top of the task creation page) to create feature requests, and fill in all the sections in the template instead of deleting them. Thanks.

Which "old interface" is this about? What is the current interface? Which exact website (full URL) is this about? Could you maybe attach a public screenshot (which does not expose any non-public data)?

The button is still here. It looks like this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OOjs_UI_icon_signature-ltr.svg. If you are using the 2017 wikitext editor, it is in the insert dropdown.

I see, thank you very much. But could you please take it from the dropdown to the same level as the dropdown itself, like it used to be in the pre-2017 interface, or at least to the same level as images, templates, and tables? Signatures are indeed common in talk pages, so it would be of great benefit to replace three clicks (if you know where to click, which until today I didn't) or six keyboard button press? Ideally signatures could be given their own button in the main editor box, in which case this button will likely be used commonly as it likely was before it was hidden away (of course, since there is no statistics on this, it's just a guess, but a likely one).

I've wanted to ask for this since forever, but (in the years when I was active on Wikipedia before returning recently) something always stopped me, and I wouldn't be too surprised if there are other editors who wanted to ask for the same thing but didn't (or maybe someone even did ask).

A button, let's say here, would be lovely for editing a talk page.

Do I understand correctly that it currently requires two clicks, and you want it to require one click?

It isn't commonly used enough to warrant being in the top level, especially as the preferred interface is now DiscussionTools which signs comments automatically.

Sorry for the delay.
Aklapper, currently three clicks are required (open the addition menu, expand it, add the signature), and I'd love it to be one. Basically every single time you write a comment on a talk page, you need to sign it, so the button would be used. In certain cases, like responding to a multiple comments, the button would be used multiple times in one edit.
Esanders, what do you mean when you say the preferred interface signs comments automatically? I would eagerly agree the signature button is no longer needed if signatures are added automatically, but that doesn't seem to be the case: I made this test edit and no signature came out of it. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Peer_review/Aluminium/archive1&diff=prev&oldid=1307549327

I seem to get it. However, consider a page like the peer review page about where not everything you add follows another user's signature. And in general, since signatures are required of users on talk pages, it would still be a great idea to add the capacity to add them in one click, which would make the interface more user-friendly and newcomers would be less likely to not meet this requirement.

I'm going to decline this request to reflect reality.
