i18n: [clearyourcache] Incorrect message
Open, Needs TriagePublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

What happens?:

  • They're giving the incorrect keyboard shortcuts. clearyourcache returns:
  • on en-wiki:

Note: After saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes. Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Safari: Hold down the {press|Shift} key and click the ‘‘Reload’’ toolbar button. For details and instructions about other browsers, see [[Wikipedia:Bypass your cache]].

  • on commons:
  • on mediawiki:
  • in core:

"clearyourcache": "Note: After publishing, you may have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes.\n* Firefox / Safari: Hold Shift while clicking Reload, or press either Ctrl-F5 or Ctrl-R (⌘-R on a Mac)\n* Google Chrome: Press Ctrl-Shift-R (⌘-Shift-R on a Mac)\n* Edge: Hold Ctrl while clicking Refresh, or press Ctrl-F5.",

"clearyourcache": "<strong>Note:</strong> After publishing, you may have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes.\n* <strong>Firefox / Safari:</strong> Hold <em>Shift</em> while clicking <em>Reload</em>, or press either <em>Ctrl-F5</em> or <em>Ctrl-R</em> (<em>⌘-R</em> on a Mac)\n* <strong>Google Chrome:</strong> Press <em>Ctrl-Shift-R</em> (<em>⌘-Shift-R</em> on a Mac)\n* <strong>Edge:</strong> Hold <em>Ctrl</em> while clicking <em>Refresh</em>, or press <em>Ctrl-F5</em>.",

What should have happened instead?:

  • Correct keyboard shortcut for Empty cache and Hard refresh/reload (Safari calls it: Reload page from origin) keyboard shortcut is: (I confirmed all the shortcuts personally, even Edge for macOS!)
  1. Chrome → Windows Ctrl-Shift-R or Shift-F5 ref → macOS ⌘Command-⇧Shift-R or ⌘Command-⇧Shift and click Refresh ref
  2. Safari → (Safari not supported on Windows) → macOS ⌘Command-⌥Option-R
  3. Firefox → Windows Ctrl-Shift-R or Ctrl-F5 [[ URL | name ]] → macOS ⌘Command-⇧Shift-R
  4. Edge → Windows Ctrl-Shift-R or Ctrl-F5 → macOS ⌘Command-Shift-R

It should be sorted in order of browser usage: Usage share of web browsers

So the correct clearyourcache is:

"clearyourcache": "<strong>Note:</strong> After publishing, you may have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes.\n* <strong>Google Chrome / Firefox / Edge:</strong> Press <em>Ctrl-Shift-R</em> (<em>⌘Command-Shift-R</em> on a Mac)\n* <strong>Safari:</strong> Hold <em>`⌘Command-⌥Option-R`</em>.",

"clearyourcache": "Note: After publishing, you may have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes.\n* Google Chrome / Firefox / Edge: Press Ctrl-Shift-R (⌘Command-Shift-R on a Mac)\n* Safari: Hold ⌘Command-⌥Option-R.",

Software version (on Special:Version page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

macOS 15.5
Chrome Version 139.0.7258.66 (Official Build) (arm64) for macOS
Safari Version 18.5 (20621.2.5.11.8) for macOS
Edge 139.0.3405.86 for macOS
Firefox

@Jdforrester-WMF: maybe you'll be interested as you made the last commit on even saying This message is already very long; Maybe this can shorten it more?

Event Timeline

Waddie96 updated the task description. (Show Details)

I’m working on this task. Will update the clearyourcache message with correct browser shortcuts.

I'd recommend reading the related discussion in T195229: Feature request: "clearyourcache" message should only show information for the specific browser being used (instead of all browsers) before working on code-changes for this task. We need to agree on the final goal/result, before implementing changes.
E.g. From the comments there, I and SD0001 believe it might be clearer to just mention the single key-combination that works for all major browsers, as currently written in the first 2 sentences of Enwiki's custom version at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Clearyourcache - I.e. (with appropriate formatting to-be-added)

Note: After saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes. Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Safari: Hold down the ⇧ Shift key and click the Reload toolbar button.

But first, someone(?) needs to make the final decision about exactly what wording to use, so that we don't waste the time of translators with multiple changes.

... believe it might be clearer to just mention the single key-combination that works for all major browsers, as currently written in the first 2 sentences of Enwiki's custom version at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Clearyourcache

I agree with you that simpler is better. My suggested update is almost as simple, but it provides two options:

  1. One keyboard shortcut for Google Chrome, Firefox, and Edge — covering both Windows/PC and macOS.
  2. One additional shortcut for Safari on macOS. Unfortunately, we cannot skip this one, as Safari’s market share (±25%) is second only to the dominant Chrome (±65%) on desktop.

I also agree not to push any changes until both this task and T195229: Feature request: "clearyourcache" message should only show information for the specific browser being used (instead of all browsers) are resolved.

Regarding T195229: I agreed with Quiddity at T195229#10342323 to keep it simple (KISS), and as part of simplifying the message in "clearyourcache" here, I support declining T195229.

Suggested "clearyourcache":

Note: After saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes. Google Chrome / Firefox / Microsoft Edge: Press Ctrl-Shift-R (⌘Command-Shift-R on Mac). Safari: Hold ⌘Command-⌥Option-R.",

Suggested code to replace "clearyourcache":

"clearyourcache": "<strong>Note:</strong> After saving, you may have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes.\n* <strong>Google Chrome</strong> / <strong>Firefox</strong> / <strong>Microsoft Edge:</strong> Press <em>Ctrl-Shift-R</em> (<em>⌘Command-Shift-R</em> on a Mac)\n* <strong>Safari:</strong> Hold <em>⌘Command-⌥Option-R</em>.",
