Iterate the teams core values and add it to our team page
Open, Needs TriagePublic3 Estimated Story Points

Description

Update our team page to reflect the teams core values. But first iterate our core values. I think we can use release engineering as a starting point:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Release_Engineering_Team/About

Document WIP: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sm9J5mzPfelJzycYrXvl9MtqFDmqTnicDRAa5p03Yls/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.c5xtg0yeoevu

Is there something in that values section that we want to change?

AC:

  • Agree what is our core values
  • Update the page to reflect them

Event Timeline

The release team values converted to ours would look like this:

Developer focus

  • Prioritize code review
  • Make excellent documentation
  • Be responsive in #talk-to-test-platform

Integrity

  • Communicate directly and honestly with teammates
  • Disagree without animosity
  • Hold each other accountable

Freedom & open source

  • Work in the open
  • Be a good upstream
  • FOSS in the decision process, always
  • Advocate for supporting open projects (*cough* 💰 *cough*)

Quality

  • Make time to add polish and features
  • Take time to write tests and do code review
  • Make documentation easy to read

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Listen like you want to be heard
  • Help each other
  • Be mindful of timezones
  • Be mindful of idioms
  • Review each other's code

I would like to change Disagree without animosity . I think you need to be an native English speaker to know what animosity means :) What about Respectfully disagree?

@Peter — I do respectfully disagree. The word animosity has clear cognates in several Romance languages due to their common Latin origin. Examples include:

LanguageCognate
Spanishanimosidad
Frenchanimosité
Italiananimosità
Portugueseanimosidade
Romaniananimozitate

All these words derive from the Latin root animositas, sharing a similar meaning related to “hostility” or “ill will.”

@Bugreporter2: That feels irrelevant if the user does not have a background in these languages. This task is instead about keeping English simple whenever possible.

Be mindful of idioms

Unsure what this means in our context 🤔

I think for us it could be in our documentation we write and also in how we communicate in meetings. We can rewrite that to be more clear (or remove it).

I will not add the core values to our page. I will move that task back to the backlog and then I want us to discuss it when we meet at the offsite. I feel writing back and forth in the document isn't optimal, I rather want us to discuss it face to face.

Peter removed Peter as the assignee of this task.Oct 10 2025, 1:57 PM
