Unchecking "Unlock further protect options" on protection settings pages can modify protection settings
Open, Needs TriagePublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • Go to a page that is extended confirmed edit protected and administrator move protected.
  • Click on "Change protection" in the tools menu to navigate to the protection settings page.
  • Uncheck "Unlock further protect options".

What happens?:

The edit protection setting changes to "Requires administrator access". It may not even be visible on the screen when this happens if you have scrolled downwards beyond it.

What should have happened instead?:

Nothing. Nothing should happen other than unblocking further protection options. Protection levels should not change in any menu without the administrator manually changing them.

Software version (on Special:Version page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

Current English Wikipedia.

Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):

Firefox. I'll attach a video shortly.

Unchecking "Unlock further protect options" has to do something; without it checked the "edit" and "move" protections are forced to be the same level. I think it should change the edit to match the move rather than vice versa, though.

It doesn't have to do anything other than allowing move protection to be changed independently once the box is unchecked (and as long as it is unchecked). Silently copying from the (previously grayed out) move protection level into the edit protection level does not make any sense.

I think it should change the edit to match the move rather than vice versa, though.

Did you reverse what you meant to say?

Regardless, I don't think unchecking the box should change any levels, in either direction. It's fine if they're synced until that point. It's unexpected and the the option receiving the magically teleported option may not even be visible on the screen.

Did you reverse what you meant to say?

Yes, I did. The act of unticking the box should change the now-grayed out options to match the one that isn't grayed out in my opinion, to avoid creating an impossible state.
