Closed, ResolvedPublic2 Estimated Story Points

Description

Context

This year we are bringing the Year in Review feature to Android, after its initial deployment and iterations on iOS. The goal is to deepen engagement and increase retention of readers.

Requirements

  • Show on first open of the app once Year in Review is available (✅ Explore feed or article view)
  • Display only once per user
  • Ensure it does not clash with any other existing modals. If so, show the YiR announcement on the next article view
  • Get started leads
  • For logged in users: directly into the Year in Review
  • For logged out users: Show the log in prompt for personalization (created on separate task)
  • Learn more leads to the MediaWiki FAQ page (in their device language if available, fallback to English)
  • If user dismisses the announcement, show snackbar that they can access Year in Review in “MORE”

@Dbrant I couldn't verify that it's showing on first open because once I enabled developer settings, I didn't see it so I accessed it through the MORE menu. Is this just a developer settings quirk? also, when I exited the flow, I didn't get the snackbar — i'm not sure if that's because I triggered the YIR from the MORE menu.

otherwise:

  1. can we make sure there is 16px between the title "explore your..." and the image?
  2. can we make sure there is 16px between the fine print above the CTAs and the CTAs themselves? right now it's floating towards the middle of the screen.
  3. can we make sure that the "more" in "Learn more" is lowercase, and the "started" in "Get started" is also lowercase?
  4. the red dot on YIR in the more menu is persisting even after I look at the YIR. can we make sure it only appears once?

You can go to Developer settings and (near the bottom of the list) there's a switch called yearInReviewVisited -- turn this back to Off, and you should re-trigger the initial YiR flow.

Looks good on 2.7.50557-r-2025-11-14, on OnePlus 8 on Android 13, and Pixel 6 on Android 16. Tested on all themes.

I have not been able to trigger the announcement on article view
Steps I'm taking (let me know if I need to do something else)

  • Fresh install of Beta
  • Turn on Developer settings
  • Navigate out of app
  • Open a wikipedia link from a browser directly to article view
  • Repeat with more external links to new articles
  • Open links form the articles
  • Force close app
  • Open a wikipedia link from a browser directly to article view

What happens

  • No YiR announcement

What should happen

  • YiR should show on article view

The only way I'm getting it to display on Article view is by clicking into an article from Explore. This is too narrow though, I worry we'll miss all the folks who primarily open links from browsers.

  • No YiR announcement

Can't reproduce this behavior -- the YiR announcement is definitely appearing if I enter the app from an external link.
