YiR: Add entry point in More menu
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Context

This year we are bringing the Year in Review feature to Android, after its initial deployment and iterations on iOS. The goal is to deepen engagement and increase retention of readers.

Requirements

  • Add Year in Review to the More menu at the bottom
  • Display an active badge until someone has viewed 1+ slides (Introductory screen counts as a slide)
  • Launch someone into the “Full page announcement" when they open it from the menu

Event Timeline

@HNordeenWMF how are you defining "1+ slides"? does that include the initial introductory slide? @Dbrant do you know? right now, if I view the introductory screen and exit I still see the red dot in the More menu, which feels a bit odd to me.

(+1 to the red dot going away after tapping it initially, i.e. upon seeing the introduction screen)

Yes we can count the introductory screen as a slide, and the red dot should go away after someone has seen the introduction screen.

Working for me on 2.7.50556-r-2025-11-13, on OnePlus 8 on Android 13, and Pixel 6 on Android 16. Tested on all themes.

Working well - but this entry point is not hiding for countries where Year in Review should not be shown (noted on this task: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T409225)

If you have Developer settings enabled, then Year-in-review is enabled explicitly, regardless of country.

Oh ok - I thought because the "donate" button hiding for certain countries was working, that this part would too. Is there no way to test the country suppression then?

You'd need to disable Developer settings after changing your GeoIP. (in Developer settings, turn off showDeveloperSettings)
