Add additional namespaces on igwiki (DRAFT, DRAFTTALK, MOS, MOSTALK)
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Feature summary: Namespaces are a core feature of all Wikimedia projects as they help to separate different types of content. Currently the following namespaces are missing on the Igbo Wikipedia - DRAFT, DRAFTTALK, MOS, MOSTTALK. Having these namespaces will definitely greatly improve the project.

Use case(s): Community members are interested in having this features on the project. See discussion here.

Benefits: The DRAFT namespace is important so articles which are not yet ready to be on main space or which have poor formatting and translations can be moved there for improvements. The Manual of Style namespace is needful to serve as a clear guide for editors. While the respective talk pages would provide room for relevant discussions.

Some key info is missing -- how do you say “draft:” and “manual of style” in Igbo?

  • Talk is Ṅkàtá
  • Ṅkàtá precedes the name of the namespace it's a talk page of, e.g. Ṅkàtá Wikipedia is equivalent to Wikipedia talk.

Kindly note that Ńkàtá the tone should sound like this .

@ObyEzeilo I'm sure people here will listen to whatever you request (or would if you had actually posted a complete thought), but per https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Localisation

A core principle of MediaWiki is that i18n must not be an afterthought

So, the namespace names really should be in Igbo. Therefore you need to request Igbo names here, and their English equivalents can be aliased.

Hi @Bugreporter2, here are the Igbo translations for the requested namespaces:

Draft: Ndepụta ana-akapị̀ghị̀ ọnú

MOS: Ákwụ́kwó ntụ̀ziaka nke ụdịdị̀

Talk: Ńkàtá

  1. The Igbo Wikipedia uses Ṅkàtá for talk, rather than Ńkàtá.
    • Is this wrong?
    • Should the new implementation match the existing implementation, or should it be how you want it?
  2. Ndepụta ana-akapị̀ghị̀ ọnú is 26 characters, including spaces. That's *a lot*. Can't you think of a simpler phrasing? One or two words that mean “unfinished” maybe?
  3. The MOS namespace exists in English because mos is the language code for the Mossi/Mooré language, and links prefixed MOS: would take users to that language's Wikipedia. All its pages are redirects to Project namespace. Is there a similar case for Igbo? If so, please outline it.

Hi @Bugreporter2

  1. Yes, the existing word (Ṅkàtá) on igwiki has a wrong tone marking. The correct one is Ńkàtá. We’d appreciate if this is implemented.
  2. You can use this word as a translation of Draft: Édēchághị́
  3. I’m not sure.

OK. I see. Thanks for the explanation, @KingChristLike

I think you should first submit a separate bug report for renaming the talk namespaces as it's going to require changes to languages / messages / MessagesIg.php. It may also require follow-up bot actions to replace the string Ṅkàtá with Ńkàtá. The only wrong name will probably have to be retained as an option. But, better fix it sooner than later. Tag with MediaWiki-Internationalization

That should be fixed first, before this one is attempted.

Hi again @Bugreporter2,

I did a quick check on the igwiki and the “discussion” or “talk” namespaces are written as - Ńkàtá (which is correct).
But when signing off my name, it displays as - Ṅkàtá (which is incorrect, with wrong tone marking). There are probably other places where it’s wrongly displayed.

I could go ahead to submit the bug report for it right?

This is about the names of the namespaces recorded in the database.

They seem incorrect as per listing in:

What you've screenshot above is the system message, which is set correctly to Ńkàtá by default. That default system message is set by languages / i18n / ig.json -- that's fine, there's nothing to change there.

But, as I said above, it's wrong (Ṅkàtá) in languages / messages / MessagesIg.php.

I hope that makes sense. If you can, you should submit the bug as it's your language.

You can do a code search at https://codesearch.wmcloud.org/search/ to find the erroneous strings. It looks like WikiEditor is wrong as well, per https://codesearch.wmcloud.org/search/?q=%C5%83k%C3%A0t%C3%A1&files=&excludeFiles=&repos=

Thanks! Submitting the bug report now.
