Login issue on reopening a stale page
Closed, InvalidPublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • 1. Open the wikipedia page from a stale page (automatically reopening the page because you are resuming your tasks from a computer restart)
  • 2. Log in manually

What happens?:
There is an error and it says you are already logged in

What should have happened instead?:
Either there shouldn't be an error when I try to log in or I should automatically be logged in anyways without having to click login

Software version (on Special:Version page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):
It's Wikipedia

Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):
Google chrome 140.0.7339.201 on a chromebook

@RBarr-12: Hi, what is a list of full steps to reproduce, including everything relevant that happened to get some "stale page", and what's displayed in the upper right corner in that case? Does a hard refresh of the page in the browser before you log in change anything?

@Nemoralis: Did the MediaWiki-Platform-Team explicitly agree to look into this?

Please provide the exact error message.

Also is this a new issue or a longstanding one that you just haven't reported before? (Or you aren't sure because you aren't reopening stale pages often?)

This issue seems to have fixed itself. I attempted to reproduce the issue by creating a stale page and logging in, hard refreshing and logging in, and blocking all the cache data and logging in. Now, I just stay logged in anyways. I don't know what happened to cause the change, sorry to take some of your time. Also a note is that if you block every site from storing on-device caches, Wikipedia will redirect you too many times and that will cause an error. I don't know if that's a separate bug or just an expected error. Thank you.

@Nemoralis: Did the MediaWiki-Platform-Team explicitly agree to look into this?

As far as I can see, they are the ones responding to login-related tasks. Especially after SUL3. (as you can see, Herald also added the team tag)

@Nemoralis: Indeed, however adding code project tags to tasks makes most sense as it is up to teams what they want to watch (e.g. via Herald) or not. :)

Hey i am newcomer here and trying to solve the error coming can you please tell me that this task is still open or solved ?

@Adarsh2406: Hi and welcome! Please carefully read all the previous comments here, plus check https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/New_Developers - thanks.

Thanks for testing it! Please feel free to reopen if you encounter the issue again.

It's not expected; you should get an error message saying you can't login with cookies disabled.
Please file it as a separate task, though.
