When a remote Item is selected and the Statement saved, that remote Item needs to be locally cached. Determine the best storage abstractions for this with the understanding that this is likely to relate to future remote Item caching. Consult with 1 to 2 experienced Wikibase engineers to consider the possible approaches and formulate a clear recommendation / decision. Options generally include:
- Creating a new table and related model code for cached remote Items
- Reuse of the existing Item table with a new attribute to indicate a remote/cached Item
- Use existing MediaWiki caching functionality (more suited for short term things, no guarantees about object persistence)
In Scope: Prototypical code as needed to weigh the appropriateness of each possible solution. Out of scope: A complete implementation.
Acceptance criteria:
- A clear and substantiated decision about the best way to cache remote Items that is maintainable, extensible and consistent with overall Wikibase data model principles.
- Any needed follow-up tickets for final implementation work in this area have been created.
