Failure to save the castor cache results in failure of job.
My memory says that this is new and undesirable, though I could be mistaken.
I see there was a job update on Nov 4th in the Jenkins UI:
Timing-wise this seems to match up to https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/integration/config/+/1201680 which also caused T409269 solved by @hashar
But this also matches a Jenkins upgrade https://sal.toolforge.org/log/dfalTpoB8tZ8Ohr0CB3W which might be more likely to cause something like this...possibly.
I think this mis-behaviour (of post-build steps failing and breaking a job that otherwise worked fine) is rare but pre-existing, but perhaps this particular issue is new / more of an issue?
