PayPal flow doesn't allow employer field to be utilized
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

The donor in #1776103 made a great point.

The donor noted:
"When I attempt to donate via paypal, the following screen appears briefly: My employer DOES offer donation matching but before I can enter my employer info the screen disappears and I am directed to Paypal. Please advise, I’d like to insure my donation is matched."

In our current flow for donations via PayPal when you get to page 2 of the donation form since you're taken to PayPal automatically we aren't giving donors the opportunity to enter their employment information in the employer field. Thus possibly missing out on matching gifts for donors who have donated via PayPal?

Related I don't have the ticket number on hand (can try to find if needed..), but I do recall we also heard from a donor recently who also noted when going through the PayPal flow that they briefly saw the privacy blurb and they didn't like that it felt like we were throwing important fine print that they couldn't actually read before being automatically redirected to PayPal.

It's nice that it automatically redirects you to PayPal as it's one less step for the donor, but if we're going to have an employer field and a privacy blurb we may consider making our PayPal flow more similar to something like Trustly. In the Trustly flow for example we give the donor the ability to enter their employer info and then they'd have a button that says "Sign in to my bank" so maybe we could have "Sign in to PayPal" or something along those lines. 🙂

Event Timeline

How many donor complaints do we get on the flow like this? I would be reticent to add steps to the flow unless we felt it was a big issue for many donors.

This is the first comment like this I've seen regarding the employer matching field using the PP flow and then the other donor I mentioned who also recently had the concern about being unable to see the privacy blurb when going through the PayPal flow. However, since it takes you to PayPal so fast I'm not sure if possibly we also don't see more comments on it as donors may just not notice.

Completely understand that as we're not hearing about it much hesitancy to add more friction to the donor experience. We definitely don't want to make it more friction-y. 🙂

I did note that it seems like the PayPal method is the only US donation method that doesn't allow you to enter your employer information. The Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Trustly, and Credit Card flows all take you to the second page and allows you enter that info before you either select donate or click on the respective button to move forward in the process.

If we don't wish to make a change to the PP flow maybe we might consider just removing the employer field for PayPal since they aren't able to actually fill it out?

Confirming we had simplified this flow to avoid an additional click. While we can explore hiding this page or removing the employer field for Paypal, given the low number of supporters this currently impacts, I'm proposing we revisit in the new year.

^ Thanks all! Definitely seems to be low volume which is good. 🙂 Did want to just note that we've come across another example this week. Donor in #1784930 noted "Hope all is well. I'm reaching out because I wanted to get my donation matched by my employer. But when I clicked the Paypal button, the option for checking matches skipped and I wasn't able to complete it. How can I get this fixed?"
