This came up as a wish especially from (but not limited to) the Wikivoyage community (pinging @RolandUnger). While it's not super common for non-Wikipedia projects to work with references, they exist. Especially the German communities like references. And naturally a community that is centered around geography will have a notable percentage of references that are maps or link to maps.
A template {{cite map|…}} exists on almost 100 wikis, see https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7035521.
Suggestion:
- Make it possible to add a "map" type to the list of pre-defined reference templates in https://de.wikivoyage.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Cite-tool-definition.json. Note how they are currently forced to use another icon.
- Any entry with the "name": "map" will get the icon by default. No need to manually set an "icon": "…".
- Manually setting "icon": "map" is also possible.
- Make sure the Reference Previews feature can pick up the class name "map" and show it as an icon.
- VisualEditor should ideally show the same icon, if possible.
- Update documentation
At the moment the supported icons are limited to "book", "journal", "news", and "web". Everything else shows the generic reference icon.
